Demy, Jacques

(1931-1990)
   director, screenwriter
   Born in Pontchâteau, Jacques Demy produced his first full-length film, Lola, in 1961. It was praised for its subtle surrealism, which is evident also in his other works, Les Parapluies de Cherbourg; 1964), Les Demoiselles de Rochefort; 1967, Peau-d'Âne; 1970 , Une chambre en ville; 1982), and Trois Places pour les 26; 1988). In 1982 he was awarded the Grand Prix des Arts et Lettres for lifetime achievement. Demy's wife, the cinematographer agnès varda, paid him a moving tribute in her film Jacquot de Nantes; 1991.
